Skarja (Smaila bridge)

(1996)

Smaila bridge and Mikkastugan (locked)

Skarja is a central point in the Sarek National Park for many reasons. Several trails meet at this place, because a bridge enables hikers to cross the Smailajåkkå here. The bridge has to be removed by helicopter in the autumn every year, because it otherwise would be destroyed in springtime by the high waters of the Smaila. It is brought to its place again in the beginning of summer. The Mikkastugan, a hut near the bridge, is locked and not accessible to hikers. The toilet hut is open and it is very useful at this "frequented" place. A hjälptelefon can be used in emergency situations.

Smailajåkkå

The Smailajåkkå is wild and impressive near the bridge. Skarja is a good place for a day trip, even if you don't want to go to one of the summits.

Smailajåkkå

The Smailajåkkå is roaring downwards behind the bridge and its waters join the Rapa river. A fence near the river prevents reindeers from falling into the canyon.

View on Kuopervagge

The ponds in the foreground represent the origin of the Rapa river. We look in eastern direction here. The valley continues into the Kuopervagge in the background, and a hike along the Kuopervagge could for instance end in Kisuris. The Kuoperjakka river can be crossed at the entrance of the valley, and when turning left one enters the Alkavagge, which is hidden by the mountain at the left foreground. Along the Alkavagge you can go to Staloluokta in probably three days and thus reach the Padjelantaleden.
