Links related to Sami people and country
The Sami are northern Scandinavia's indigenous people. As a tourist you travel through the country where they live since thousands of years. An easy access to learn about their ancient and present history, life and culture is to visit a museum. In Jokkmokk/Sweden the Ajtte museum is excellent. A similar, still bigger museum is situated in Rovaniemi/Finland, the Arktikum. Kiruna has a smaller museum now. I have been to the museum in Tromsoe, Norway, and found the exhibition very interesting.
And you can learn a lot about the Sami by browsing the WWW. As an entry point, I would recommend the english pages of "Samerna" (www.sametinget.se). If you have a good internet connection, you should not miss the music page with its modern jojk. Another interesting server is Boreale with the pages An introduction to the Sami people. Boreale offers an Exhibition of Sami handicraft. The private homepage of Glenn Jakobsen (pages.nyu.edu/~jakobsng/sami.htm) is excellent. Another interesting server is www.vn.fi/vn/um/finfo/english/saameng.html. The Department of Saami Studies at the University of Umea has a Home Page with links.
A collection of links to servers in the arctic region with more general themes is www.oulu.fi/aine/kalotti.html.
