My Opinion Concerning the Use of a GPS
Is it necessary to use a GPS to hike through Northern Sweden ? My personal opinion for the summer season: Of course not, but it can be fun. During summertime, I think, you normally need just a map. In an average landscape, it will be difficult to lose a marked trail that leads along between a river at one side and a mountain at the other. Even on our tour through the Sarek Park it was not really necessary to use a compass, a comparison between the map and the landscape was sufficient to find the way.
But I think that a GPS is very useful on winter tours or tours, where visibility might be bad. Distances are more difficult to estimate in winter, lakes a more difficult to see, and visibility might be bad. As I had stored the coordinates of cabins in the GPS for our winter tour, we rarely used a map that time, because I could check how many kilometres we would have to go just by pressing a button.
